CCTV installation
Wired or Wi-Fi cameras? Questions to ask during a site visit
Compare the connection plan for each location before choosing an equipment package.

Start with the location, not the label
“Wired” and “Wi-Fi” describe parts of a system, not a complete coverage plan. Make a list of the views you need and discuss how each proposed camera location connects to power, the network and recording. Different parts of a property may have different practical constraints.
Ask what the installation will involve
Request an explanation of cable routes, mounting, equipment locations and any network work. Ask which items are included in the estimate and which depend on a closer inspection. This makes it easier to compare proposals on scope instead of camera count alone.
- Where will cables run, and how will visible sections be finished?
- Does a proposed wireless location have suitable power?
- Is network work included or listed separately?
Discuss how you will use recordings
Tell the installer whether your priority is checking activity live, finding an earlier incident, or both. Ask where recordings will be stored, how playback works and which features depend on the chosen equipment or internet connection. Request a demonstration of the intended workflow before final handover.
Write down your constraints
A rented property, a finished interior or an outdoor location may need a different installation approach. Bring any mounting restrictions and approval requirements to the conversation early. If you have existing equipment, provide model information so compatibility can be assessed rather than assumed.
Compare the complete plan
The useful outcome is a proposal that explains coverage, equipment, connection paths, recording and handover. Ask for clarification if one of those pieces is missing. A site visit should help you understand the tradeoffs for your specific property, not simply pick a universal winner.
